Athletic Training Alumni Reception

Having the National Athletic Trainers Association meeting in St. Louis gave us a great opportunity to welcome back our former Athletic Training Staff and Students at Lorenzini's in Chaifetz Arena.

Swim-Ex sponsored the reception and we had a great turnout. In addition to renewing old friendships, everyone was able to get a tour of the arena, with the highlight being our new state of the art athletic training facility.

Pictured on the court at Chaifetz Arena is Doisy College of Health Sciences Dean Charlotte Royeen and the current and former Athletic Training staff and students who attended the reception on June 21, 2008.

USA Today article on athletic trainers

http://www.usatoday.com/sports/preps/2008-06-18-hs-trainers_N.htm

Focuses on need for athletic trainers at high schools....I just wish they used "Athletic Trainer" instead of just "trainer" in the headline.

We be jammin.....!!!!

For the eighth straight year our medical staff covered the Nike Hoop Jamboree, an invitational basketball camp featuring 120 of the top 9th and 10th graders from all over the United States. It is a great opportunity for our students to gain experience with high level basketball.

It took place in the Simon Recreation Center on the SLU campus from Thursday, June 12th to Sunday June 15th.

We look forward to our students gain experience in this camp more in future years!

Remembering Tim Russert

I know this does not have much to do with Athletic Training, but the passing of Tim Russert has affected me...

He often spoke eloquently about his family and his Jesuit education.

Hear him speak on this video made by John Carroll University:

He will be missed....

Taking a dip in the Swim-Ex

We had a great professional development opportunity today!

When an institution buys a Swim-Ex hydrotherapy pool, part of the package is a training session by a practitioner in the field. David Brennan, from the Human Performance Lab at the University of Oklahoma Health Science Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma, gave us a training session on the use of the Swim-Ex pool.

He commented that Chaifetz Arena has one of Swim-Ex's newest and most versatile pools and he showed us how to make the most of it. It will be utilized for rehabilitation, reconditioning and cardiovascular training and will help Billiken athletes spend the least amount of "downtime".

Not only will it help Jonathan Burch and his staff serve the SLU Athletic Department, it will also serve as a great teaching tool for our Athletic Training students.

David Brennan (standing on platform) leading the Swim-Ex training session. In the pool is SLU Athletic Trainer Theresa Hummel, watching is Dr. Mark Reinking, Angie Wills, Dr. Tricia Austin and Jonathan Burch.

Another mention.......

Quotes by Dr. Cannon and Tony in the Suburban Journal.....

Welcome MAT class of 2013

On Monday June 2nd the first students in our first freshman class attended the SLU 101 orientation session. It was very exciting to help Michael Boyce (Chicago, IL/Marist) , Rachel Cocek (Dallas, TX/Ursuline), Rachel Murphy (Maryland Heights, MO/Parkway North) and Kevin Steitz (Frontenac, MO/SLUH) get set up on campus with classes and all the other things they need to be successful at SLU.

SLU 101 is a part of a larger First Year Experience program at SLU. You can more information at: http://www.slu.edu/x2881.xml

There are 7 more orientation sessions for incoming students this summer. We can't wait to meet more of our new students!

SLU hosts SLATA

On Saturday, May 31, 2008, the Athletic Training Education Program hosted the annual meeting for the Saint Louis Athletic Trainers Association at The Doisy College of Health Sciences building on the SLU campus. Miles Leisman from Midwest Medical Resources and Don Joy Orthopedics sponsored the meeting.

The educational session started at 8:00 am with Dr. Mark Reinking presenting "Orthopaedic Shoulder Examination, an Evidence-Based Approach". This was extremely informative an gave the attendees some practical recommendations, based on the latest evidence, for use in their clinical practice.

Next, Karen Fennell, SLATA President spoke on "Professional Responsibility", which brought on a very lively discussion amongst the 25 attendees.

Finally, the morning ended with a business meeting, which ended at 12:15 pm.

It was indeed a great opportunity for us to bring this meeting on our campus. We look forward to staying involved and supporting this enthusiastic and growing organization.

Also, best wishes to Karen Fennell, the SLATA President who announced that she is moving to California this summer. She was on the Billiken Sports Medicine staff in the 1990's and has been very supportive of the development of the SLU Athletic Training Education Program. She has been active in our local, state and regional professional organizations and she has served on the committee to develop a SLU Athletic Training reception at Chaifetz Arena on June 21st after the NATA meeting, which is in St. Louis this year.
