2019 SLU AT Speaker Series Addresses Diversity, Collaboration and Opportunity in Health Care

8th Annual SLU Athletic Training Speakers Series and Recognition Ceremony

The Saint Louis University Athletic Training Program hosted its 8th Annual Speaker Series and Recognition Ceremony on Monday, February 18, 2019 at 7:00 pm in the Education Union Auditorium on Medical Center (South) Campus.

The event was presented by the Saint Louis University chapter of Iota Tau Alpha - the Athletic Training Honor Society - and supported by the SLU Student Government Association. The evening began with the 2019 initiation ceremony for the SLU Alpha Iota Chapter of Iota Tau Alpha, the National Athletic Training Honor Society.

The Brandi Burgett Memorial Award and Scholarship was dedicated, with Brandi's parents Robert and Marnie Burgett making remarks and recognizing the inaugural scholarship honorees Erin Fabbri and Brian Leach.

Bauman Scholarship award winners Jazmon Carroll and Adam Long were also recognized. Fr. Robert Murphy SJ gave an invocation and Dr. Tricia Austin, Chair of the SLU Department of Physical Therapy and Athletic Training, made introductory remarks and welcomed attendees.

The keynote speaker for the event was Murphy Grant, MS, ATC, LAT, Associate Athletic Director at University of Kansas and President of the NATA Intercollegiate Council for Sports Medicine

The title of his presentation was:
“Leveraging the Greatness of ‘We:’ Enabling a Culture of Opportunity in Health Care”

Following the keynote presentation, there was a panel discussion which included Murphy Grant; along with Rhonda BeLue, PhD, Chair of the Department of Health Management and Policy in the SLU College for Public Health and Social Justice and Ron Wagner, Ph.D, ATC, Founder and President of the Athleticare Sports Health Foundation.

It was once again an evening of informative discussion and special recognition of SLU AT students!

SLU Chapter of National Athletic Training Honor Society Inducts Newest Members


Saint Louis University's Alpha Iota Chapter of Iota Tau Alpha, the National Athletic Training Honor Society, inducted new members on February 10, 2014.  The ceremony took place in the Wall Auditorium in the Education Union on the SLU Medical Center Campus.  Following the ceremony, there was a presentation on "Mental Health and the Athlete" by Timothy Neal ATC and Michael Ross PhD. 

Over 120 students and professionals attended the keynote presentation.

Mr. Neal is the Associate Athletic Director for Sports Medicine at Syracuse University. He is prominently involved in the development of position statements and policies for athletic trainers with regard to management of mental health in athletes.  Dr. Ross is a professor in the Department of Psychology at SLU. He serves as the Faculty Athletics Representative and teaches a course in the AT program titled: "Psychology of Sport and Injury".

Medical Center Campus Education Union Enhances the Student Experience

Saint Louis University's new Education Union on the Medical Center Campus has already improved the quality of life for our students.  Opened in July 2011, it houses: a state of the art auditorium that is designed for interprofessional interaction, a student lounge (which includes group and quiet study areas), computer workstations, a cafe/snack bar and clinical teaching labs.

SLU Medical Center Campus Construction Projects Near Completion

The construction of the new Education Union and Recreation/Track and Field Complex on the Saint Louis University Medical Center Campus is nearly finished.  They both are set to be up and running by when the students arrive for Fall Semester.

The new Saint Louis University sign facing Compton Ave., complete with the decorative planting of the SLU Fluer-de-Lis logo.
 
The Receation Complex is located adjacent to the Allied Health Building, Center for Advanced Dental Education and the Hickory East Garage.
 
The 8 lane 400 meter track still awaits striping, but the complex has added significant green space to the Medical Center Campus.

The sleek facade of the Education Union provide an attractive gateway to the Medical Center Campus.

The Clock Tower sits tall at the middle point of the Medical Center Campus, while concrete work and landscaping is being completed around the Education Union.

Medical Center Campus Construction Projects Taking Shape

The new facility additions to Saint Louis University's Medical Center Campus are really making progress....they seem to be on target for completion by the Fall of 2011.(click on photos to view more detail)

Installation has begun on the glass facade of the Education Union.

The clock tower adjacent to the Education Union is already up and running!

The asphalt base of the 400 meter track has been laid on the on the Sports and Recreation Complex which is blessed with a beautiful view of downtown St. Louis, including the Gateway Arch.

Recent rains have left their mark, but have not deterred installation of the light standards and the service building.

Spring Thaw = Construction Season

The week of 70+ temps not only melted the snow, but allowed the construction crews to make great progress on the Medical Center Education Union....which is due to be finished this summer!

Medical Campus Construction Projects Making Great Progress

Thanks to the great weather, the SLU Medical Campus construction projects are making great progress.  The Education Union and the Recreation Center/Track are taking shape as is evident in the attached photos.

The Education Union will provide a gateway to the Medical Campus.

Walls are going up steadily for the new 250 seat auditorium in the Education Union.

Recreation Center/Track will include a full intercollegiate 400 meter 8-lane track with an intramural soccer field in the center on a beautiful location overlooking the city of St. Louis.
