SLU ATEP announces National Athletic Training Month activities

Doisy College's Athletic Training Education Program in conjunction with the National Athletic Trainer's Association (NATA), celebrates March as Athletic Training month.

The program at Saint Louis University celebrates through activities, hands-on experience and service projects. The Athletic Training Education Program is the official athletic training staff for the Missouri Valley Conference men's and women's basketball tournaments.

The men's tournament was March 6-8 and Tony Breitbach, Ph.D., director of SLU's athletic training education program, was recognized on the court with a plaque for his service to the tournament.

The MVC women's tournament was held March 13-15 at Family Arena in St. Charles. The Missouri Valley Conference also recognizes Athletic Training Month with announcements throughout the tournaments.

The SLU athletic department also recognized Athletic Training Month at the men's basketball game versus LaSalle on Saturday, March 7.

To continue the Athletic Training Education Program's momentum, the program, in its association with SLUCare, is part of the official medical staff of the RiverCity Rage football team. Athletic Training students will get hands-on experience with this professional indoor football team. The Athletic Training honor society, Iota Tau Alpha, was just chartered for the program in the Doisy College of Health Sciences at Saint Louis University. The honor society is recognized by the NATA and recognizes students who excel academically and professionally in the field of Athletic Training.

And finally, the Saint Louis University Athletic Training Society (SLATS) plans to celebrate the special month through a service project late in the month.

More madness....the women's tournament

Another weekend of basketball action!!!!

The SLU Athletic Training Education Program had the opportunity to cover the Missouri Valley Conference Women's Basketball Tournament at the Family Arena in St. Charles, MO.

If you are keeping score, we covered 18 games in 11 days and had a great time. David Biancamano from the Missouri Valley Conference coordinated the touranments and created a great situtation for us.

This weekend we were joined by Dr. Matt Matava from Washington University and Casey Kohr, Lauren Willett, Lauren Johnson and Brittney Reed from Clarke College.

We need to check with the Guiness Book of World Records, but we believe that Dr. Matava broke the modern record for abstracts reviewed at the scorer's table during an athletic event. Being a master multitasker, he was also attentive to the games and managed an on-court injury with the help of our staff.

Fortunately, Dr Paul Nativi, the tournament dentist, had no business as compared to busy men's tournament.

The Illinois State Redbirds beat the Drake Bulldogs in the finals, avenging the men's game from the week before. Thanks to all of the Athletic Trainers we had the pleasure to meet and work with at the tournament and congratulations to Athletic Trainers Karri Miller from ISU and Angie Dahl from Drake on an outstanding tournament!
